Geoffrey Hinton, one of the pioneers of deep learning and often referred to as the "Godfather of AI," used the international spotlight of his 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics to issue a grave warning about the technology he helped create.
While acknowledging the immense benefits AI can bring to fields like medicine and productivity, he stressed that the rapid pace of development has introduced existential risks. His core fear is that within two decades, AI systems will surpass human intelligence, leading to an uncontrollable digital consciousness that could potentially make humanity irrelevant or even pose a physical threat.
Hinton's disturbing message centered on the difficulty of controlling an intelligence that is significantly smarter than its creators. He resigned from his position at Google to speak more openly about these dangers, arguing that companies are being pushed by market pressure to prioritize capability over safety. He has repeatedly called for urgent, collaborative research into AI safety and control mechanisms, emphasizing that without strong, global regulation—which he believes only governments can enforce against industry lobbying—humanity risks an unprecedented crisis where "digital beings" take control.
