The 1994 Disney animated film 
The Lion King
was Disney's first original animated film

Hercules 1997
The story of Hercules was told in 
many myths and writings, 
including books, but it originated 
as a figure in Greek mythology.


Moana  2016 
Based on a story conceived by Clements, Musker, 
Williams, Hall, Pamela Ribon, and the writing team 
of Aaron Kandell and Jordan Kandell.


Mulan 1998
The first written record of Mulan 
is the Ballad of Mulan, 
a folk song believed to have been composed 
during the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-535 AD) 
and compiled in an anthology of books and songs 
in the Southern Chen Dynasty (557-589 AD).

Sleeping Beauty 1959
Based on a book, The Sleeping Beauty
by Charles Perrault - first published in 1634.
Charles Perrault wrote the original version 
of Sleeping Beauty, while the Brothers Grimm 
wrote a later version titled Little Briar Rose


Aladdin 1992
The story of Aladdin was originally
a book called The Arabian Nights.


The Hunchback of Notre Dame 1996
Was originally a book written by Victor Hugo in 1831.


Snow White 1937
The original tale is in a 19th-century collection 
of fairy tales written in German by the Brothers Grimm, 
who also wrote Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and Rumplestiltskin. 
The Brothers Grimm published their book in 1812, 
featuring the story of Sneewittchen (Snow White).


Pocahontas 1995
Pocahontas was adapted from a book about the life of Pocahontas.
Real-life Pocahontas (1596–1617) was the daughter of a
Native American chief of the Powhatan paramountcy.
She was born "Amonute" but had a more private name of Matoaka.
"Pocahontas" was a nickname that meant "playful one".
Disney's Pocahontas was the first Disney Princess to be based on a real person.


Beauty and the Beast 1991
Was originally a book written by
 Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve in 1740.


Tangled 2010
Rapunzel was originally a fairy tale in a book, 
published by the Brothers Grimm in 1812. 
The Disney movie Tangled is loosely based on that fairy tale.


Frozen 2013
"Frozen" is based on a book, specifically the fairy tale 
"The Snow Queen" by Hans Christian Andersen, 
which means the story existed in book form 
before the movie was created; however, 
the Disney adaptation significantly changed many 
aspects of the original story to create a different 
narrative with a stronger focus on sisterly love.


Cinderella 1950
Cinderella was originally a book written by 
Charles Perrault in 1697. Walt Disney's animated film 
adaptation was based on Perrault's version.
  

The Little Mermaid 1989
The Little Mermaid was originally a book 
written by Hans Christian Andersen in 1837. 
The Disney movie was loosely based on the book.

  
Alice In Wonderland 1951
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was published in 
1865 by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, 
who used the pseudonym Lewis Carroll.


Peter Pan 1953
Peter Pan was originally a play 
written by J. M. Barrie in 1904. 
Barrie later adapted the play into a novel in 1911. 
Disney's animated film Peter Pan was based 
on Barrie's play and novel.

 
Lady and the Tramp 1955
Was originally a book 
by Ward Greene, published in 1953. 
The book was based on a short story Greene 
wrote for Cosmopolitan magazine in 1945. 
The book was published before the Disney film as released.


Aristocats 1962
The Aristocats was not originally a book, 
but was based on a story by Tom McGowan 
and Tom Rowe. The story was inspired by a 
children's book about a family of cats.


Tarzan 1999
Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote the Tarzan 
book series, which began in 1912. The first movie 
adaptation was a silent film in 1918.


1997 animated film produced 
by 20th Century Fox, not Disney
Based on a story adaptation by Eric Tuchman.


Princess and the Frog 2009
Inspired by the 2002 novel The Frog Princess 
by E. D. Baker. The Frog Princess is a modern retelling 
of the classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale, "The Frog Prince".
