"You Gave Me My Life Back" - Heartwarming Story

I was a librarian when a homeless man started coming in every day when we opened, staying until we closed.

He'd sit in the corner reading, never caused problems, but I could tell other patrons were uncomfortable.

My boss wanted him banned.

I said, 'Give me a week'.

I started talking to him. His name was Vincent. He'd been a high school English teacher before his wife died of cancer. The medical bills destroyed him. He lost his house, his job, everything.

'I came here because I felt human again surrounded by books', he said quietly.

I noticed he'd write in a notebook sometimes.

One day I asked what he was working on.

'Letters to my daughter. She won't talk to me. She's ashamed of what I've become. I write to her anyway, every day, even though I have no address to send them to'.

My heart broke, I started bringing him lunch, let him use the staff bathroom to clean up. I helped him apply for social services on the library's computer, made calls to the shelters, got him connected with a veterans program. Three months later, he got into transitional housing. Six months after that, he found work.

A year later, he walked into the library in a suit. He'd gotten a teaching job at a community college. He was crying.

'I have an apartment, I have my life back'.

Then he showed me his phone, a text from his daughter. She wanted to see him.

'You gave me my dignity back when everyone else saw trash. You never gave up on me'.

He handed me a book, a published collection of his letters to his daughter. The dedication page said

"To Helen, the librarian, who saved my life by treating me like I still mattered".

1854-1929 THE ORPHAN TRAINS IN AMERICA!!

The Orphan Trains were a social experiment in the United States between 1854 and 1929, during which an estimated 200,000 orphaned, abandoned, or homeless children from crowded Eastern cities - mostly New York - were sent by train to rural areas across the country to be placed with foster families.

Organized by charitable institutions like the Children's Aid Society and the New York Founding Hospital, the movement aimed to provide these children with better lives through adoption or indentured labor.  

While many children did find loving homes, others faced exploitation or abuse, sparking debate about child welfare and leading to the rise of the modern foster care system.

The Stanford Car Experiment Wasn't About Cars - It's About People

In 1969, Stanford psychologist Philip Zimbardo 

placed two identical cars

with hoods up and no license plates 

in the Bronx, NY, and Palo Alto, CA. 

The Bronx car was stripped within 24 hours, 

while the Palo Alto car was untouched for a week 

until Zimbardo smashed it, 

prompting others to destroy it.
